Rains let up for few hours in DK and Udupi on Friday; “Red Alert” extended

Mangaluru: The heavy downpour in Dakshina Kannada eased a little after 3 days on Friday. However, with the IMD predicting more rainfall in the coming days, schools and colleges will remain closed on Saturday.

The residents got a welcome respite from the wet weather in the morning till evening as rains eased on Friday.

The situation in hilly areas of Borugudde in Derebail is precarious due to the landslides. Of the 60 houses in Borugudde, 10 are near the cliff and are in danger of a collapse.

A house was damaged due to the collapse of a hill in Belthangady’s Neria. Another house was damaged in Mundaje.

Flight diverted

The Dubai-Mangalore SpiceJet flight, which was supposed to land at Mangalore airport on Friday evening, was diverted to Cochin due to bad weather.

“Red Alert” extended for 2 days

As per IMD’s latest weather report, heavy rains are expected continue in the coastal region. A “Red Alert” has been sounded from 8:30 AM on July 9 till 8:30 AM on July 10.

Heavy rain wreaks havoc in Udupi, Kundapura

Udupi: Residents in the district had a harrowing time as the strong winds and heavy rainfall continued on Friday in the district.

As many as 22 houses –including 5 in Byndur taluk, 9 in Kundapur, 2 in Kapu, 3 in Brahmavar and 3 in Udupi taluks– collapsed. Electricty distribution company MESCOM reported that 8 electricity transformers (TC), 69 electricity poles, and 2.19 meters of electric wire were damaged incurring a loss of Rs.21.59 lakhs.

The incessant rainfall has caused the rivers to overflow, prompting people living in low areas to abandon their homes to move to safer areas. In Kundapur and Byndur, many low-lying areas and agricultural lands have been flooded. Swarna river is overflowing in Udupi Kalyanpur as well, and water has entered the plantations in the Kudru areas.

Udupi District Deputy Commissioner Kurma Rao said that 13 bridges and 64 houses suffered damage.
