Hebri: It has been a week since bus and heavy vehicle movement were stopped on the Agume Ghat road following a landslide at the fourth bend. However, fears of another landslide have renewed as more cracks have developed now on the third bend due to the incessant rains on Saturday.
Adgumbe Ghat received 17 cm of rainfall on Saturday. It is being said that due to the heavy rainfall, the stormwater was gushing along the retention walls, leading to cracks. The rainwater may ingress into these cracks further destabilizing the soil and could lead to another landslide on the hilly terrain.
The closure of the ghat road has affected passengers trying to reach Udupi and Manipal from Shivamogga, especially those in need of medical care.
For now, cars, two-wheeler, and light vehicles are being let to use Ghat road. If the rains continue unabated, they could also be stopped as a precautionary measure.
