Mangaluru: Karnataka government, on Monday, conditionally approved the proposal of the Mangaluru City Corporation for reducing water tariffs for domestic users.
The Directorate of Municipal Administration has approved MCC’s proposal which will come into effect from August 1. The new tariff will be applicable for one year, after which the corporation will have to seek reapproval of the revised rates, the order said.
According to sources, efforts by Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath were instrumental in attracting the government’s attention to the issue.
“The government has approved MCC Council’s resolution adopted on May 31. A circular to this effect has been issued,” Mangaluru Mayor Premananda Shetty said.
As per the resolution, MCC Council proposed to reduce the tariffs for domestic consumers. Accordingly, monthly water usage of up to 20,000 liters by a household will get a bill of Rs 100 (Rs 5 per kilo liter), Rs 11 per kilo liter for water consumed between 20,000 to 25,000 liters, and Rs 14 per kilo liter for usage beyond 25,000 liters.
According to MCC’s proposal, the revenue loss from reducing domestic water tariffs will be covered by the bills collected from industrial users who use more than 70,000 liters every month.
