Kushtagi: In a shocking incident, a prematurely born foetus was found floating in a drain in Tavaragera town near here on Saturday.
The baby was found with its umbilical cord intact, floating in the drain near the Town Cooperative Bank in the 10th Ward of the town. Police were alerted of the shocking development by the locals.
According to sources, the baby was delivered preterm, after a gestation period of 4 to 5 months. The gender of the baby could not be ascertained due to the premature development, they added.
It is suspected that the mother may have gone into premature labour and the foetus was discarded in the gutter.
Meanwhile, Tavaragera Police have taken up the investigation. The mortal remains were fished out of the drain and were taken to the Government Community Health Center for an autopsy.
Later the last rites were performed by the town panchayat.
