Heavy rains: Red alert sounded for K’taka coast

Mangalore/Udupi: IMD has predicted heavy Monsoon rainfall to continue by issuing a Red alert for the coastal districts on August 5. Heavy rains accompanied by winds and sea swell are expected, it said.
Dakshina Kannada received good rainfall on Thursday too. Weather was partly cloudy in Mangaluru during the day, but as the night wore on the rain started pouring heavily. The day was cloudy in Udupi with rains in the evening time.
58 persons shifted to shelters
As the danger from heavy rains hasn’t abated, a total of 58 people have taken shelter in various care centers in Kadaba and Sullia taluks.
There was widespread damage to property reported from the district. As many as 3 houses were completely damaged and 7 houses were partially damaged. There were reports of electric poles, 2 transformers,the power line (wire) getting snapped.
NDRF and SDRF have been put on alert to handle any natural calamity that may occur in the district. A 20-member team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed in Subrahmanya. A 55-member team of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is also ready.
