Mangaluru: Court convicts, sentences trio for attempt to murder

Mangaluru: The III Additional District and Sessions Court in Mangaluru convicted 3 accused in an attempt to murder case. Judge B.B. Jakati pronounced the sentence in the case on Friday.

The case was registered against the accused — Prasanna Kumar, Jayanthi Suvarna, and Raksha Suvarna — for the murderous assault on Vasantharaja Shetty in Kontadka of Niddodi village of Mudubidiri taluk owing to a land dispute.

Case details

The incident occurred on the morning of February 28, 2020, when the trio entered the compound of Vasantharaj Shetty illegally with weapons and assaulted him. Two eyewitnesses had testified against the accused in the case.

The court heard the evidence presented before it and pronounced that the prosecution had proven the guilt beyond doubt and convicted the accused.

The convicts each were ordered to pay Rs 500 fine or serve one week in prison under section 447 of IPC (criminal trespass); 3 years ordinary imprisonment and Rs 1,000 in fines under section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt); 6 months imprisonment under section 504 of IPC (intentional insult); 3 years imprisonment and Rs 1,000 in fines under section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder).

Of the fines collected, the court ordered Rs 6,000 be paid to the victim Vasathraj Shetty as compensation.

Public prosecutor Narayana Sherigar U. argued on behalf of the government in the case.
