Kollur: The body of a woman from Kerala, who had washed away in the Sowparnika river on September 10, was recovered on Sunday.

The mortal remains of Shanti Shekharan (42), wife of Murugan from Thiruvananthapuram, were found about 1 km from the bathing ghat of Shree Mookambika Temple where the incident occurred.

According to sources, a group of 14 devotees had arrived at Kollu from Thiruvanathapuram to visit the temple. The mishap occurred when the group had gone to the bathing ghat for a holy dip. Shanti Sekharan jumped into the river after seeing that her son Aditya was being swept away by the river. Her husband Murugan also jumped and swam back with his son in tow. But Shanti was washed away by the swift current.

A search operation was launched and the body was fished out on Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, locals, as well as pilgrims, lamented the absence of enough safety precautions at the bathing ghat. They have demanded that a barricade be erected to prevent devotees from entering the water during the rainy season, so as to prevent such accidents from happening.
