30 black spots identified on Udupi highway: Officials to be held responsible in case of accidents

Udupi: Udupi Deputy Commissioner M. Kurma Rao on Wednesday said the district administration has identified over 30 accident-prone areas (black spots) and the authorities concerned have been intimated to undertake repair works immediately for the safety of the motorists, He also instructed them to submit a report to District Road Safety Authority on the action taken within a week.
Presiding over the District Road Safety Committee meeting held at the district office at Rajatadri in Manipal, on Wednesday Kurma said that officials of NHAI and PWD have been instructed to repair the railway overbridge at Indrali on National Highway 169A in a month’s time starting from October 1. He said that the departments concerned, including the police, provide the cooperation needed to ensure smooth flow of traffic and ensure completion of the work.
He urged the public to adhere to road safety rules which will result in reduced accidents. Towards this end, the DC instructed that road signs warning motorists of road humps, zebra crossing, etc be installed in city limits.
Speaking at the meeting, Superintendent of Police Akshay M. Hakay said that NHAI and PWD officials will be held responsible if they fail to execute the safety works at the black spots that have been brought to their notice. Police would register cases against the officials in case of any accidents at these spots in the future, he said.
He further stressed the use of helmets and seat belts for the safety of vehicle users.
