Udupi: Strict legal action will be initiated against those spreading false news on social media platforms about child theft and kidnapping, said District Superintendent of Police Hakay Akshay Machindra.
The warning from Udupi SP comes after several fake news were observed circulating on social media platforms. Unrelated videos from various countries are being spread falsely claiming to be incidents occurring in the district.
Such fake news has spread panic, with members of the public stopping innocent persons and attacking them on suspicion.
The SP warned the public not to take the law into their own hands. If any suspicious person is found, dial helpline number 112 and alert the police, he said and added that police will come to the spot on priority and take appropriate actions.
