Kundapur: The carcass of a whale that had been washed ashore at Trasi-Maravante beach was buried by the locals here.
The carcass of the rare pilot whale, weighing around 500 kg was spotted a few days ago and a foul smell had begun emanating from it by Wednesday.
As the concerned department officials did not take any steps to dispose of the carcass, the local Bacha boys team buried it in the sand.
Meanwhile, a post-mortem conducted by the forest officials and officials of Mangalore’s Reefwatch Marine Conservation Organization revealed that the whale may have died due to the pressure of the dry environment as there was no air in the lungs.
