Cleaning work in progress

Malpe: After being shut to tourists for more than 4 months, St Mary’s Island is expected to be reopened from September 26. The cleaning of the beaches and surroundings has begun at the popular vacation spot.

Like every year, the district administration had suspended boat services to the popular tourist destination for the monsoon period. Public access to the island off the Malpe coast was restricted from May 15 till September 15. During this period water adventure sports were also prohibited at Malpe beach.

The garbage and waste collected at the beach shores are being cleared. Other facilities such as the entrance, canteen, and toilets are being repaired under the supervision of the Malpe Beach Development Committee.

Udupi Deputy Commissioner M Kurma Rao said that instructions for cleaning beaches and other facilities at the island have been issued. “we are giving more importance to the safety of tourists,” he said and added that further decisions will be taken depending on the sea conditions.
