Lumpy skin disease: DK’s first suspected case detected in Bantwal

Bantwal: The dreaded lumpy skin disease (LSD) may have reached the district. In what appears to be the first such instance in the district, three cattle in Biliyoor village in the taluk are suspected to be infected by the viral disease.

Of the three infected animals, one has died and two are being treated.

As per Dakshina Kannada Animal Husbandry Department, the veterinarians of KMF started treating the suspected potential lumpy skin disease cases on October 8. One cow died on October 11. However, death has not been attributed to lumpy skin disease.

Meanwhile, the department has already started precautionary measures to stop the spread of the viral infection.

Deputy Director of the Animal Husbandry Department for D.K. District Arun Kumar Shetty said that the cattle in the village have been vaccinated. Of the 2000 LSD vaccines received, 600 cattle have been vaccinated in the Biliyoor area. Rest has been supplied to Goshalas in the vicinity. Further, fogging has been done to control mosquitoes.

He said that the department has given a report to the government about the dead cattle.
