Mangaluru: In the past six weeks, two liver transplant surgeries have been carried out successfully by a team of liver transplant experts from Manipal Hospitals at KMC Hospital.

The organs were recovered from deceased donors.

The liver transplant surgeries were carried out on two patients.

On Thursday, November 3, speaking to the media, one of the recipients named Girish Aithal (48) said that he never expected that he would recover anytime soon. He said that he had suffered a lot and that he had given up hope.

Girish feels ‘lucky’ to have registered for a liver in Mangaluru as he got a donor within three months of registering.

Speaking about the surgery process, he said that it was a 12-hour-long surgery.

As per the reports of TOI, Girish suffered from Jaundice during the pandemic in the year 2021. This had deteriorated his health condition.

Earlier, a 58-year-old patient and beneficiary had undergone liver transplant surgery.

Addressing the media, Chief Liver Transplant Surgeon, Manipal Hospitals Dr. Rajiv Lochan said that with an integrated expertise of clinicians, liver transplants can be a routine programme.

Throwing light on the health aspects of two patients, Consultant-HPB and Liver Transplantation Surgery, Manipal Hospitals, Dr. Lohit Shetty Raju said that both the patients needed repeated admissions due to the severity of their disease. He said that many recipients were sole breadwinners for their families.
