Bengaluru: A gang of five, including a man and his mother-in-law, that was involved in breaking and entering houses at night and decamping with gold was nabbed by Soladevanahalli police.

The ring leader was identified as Venkatesh a native of Tumakuru. His mother-in-law Mahadevamma was also part of the gang, police said.

With the arrest, at least 12 theft cases registered at various police stations have been solved, police claimed.

Police also recovered valuables worth Rs 61.45 lakhs including  — a car, a Mahindra Thar, and 829 grams of stolen gold — from the accused.

Modus operandi:

Venkatesh roped in three of his friends for robbing houses when the occupants were away. They would identify locked houses by day and break into them at night by cutting window sills using hydraulic steel cutters. They would decamp with gold. The stolen valuables were handed to Mahadevamma, who later sold it, police said.

The accused, Venkatesh, had been involved in house-breaking for the last three years. His mother-in-law Mahadevamma supported him in all his work, police added.
