Mangaluru: A person allegedly found bundles of Indian currency notes from a box near Pumpwell bus stand in the city, but the owners of which are not known.
After finding the cash, the person, who happens to be a bus mechanic, took some notes from it and bought liquor. It is learned that a member of the public informed the police about the cash in his possession and accordingly the police reached the spot and seized the cash and detained the mechanic for questioning.
When inquired, the mechanic who was inebriated told police that the cash was found near the Pumpwell bus stand. Another person who was with him also took a cut of the find, he added.
‘Rs 5 to 10 lakh was in the box’
“The box containing the notes was lying on the road near Pumpwell bus stand. I did not count the money in it. There may have been Rs 5 to 10 lakhs in it. I took 2 notes of Rs 500 from it. I and my friend bought alcohol with it. I gave one bundle to another person.
“The police took me to the station and interrogated me. I told them that I did not steal the money. If there was a phone number on the box, it could have been returned. I don’t want that kind of money, I wouldn’t even have taken it home. I earn my living working in a bus and that’s enough” said the mechanic.
Only Rs 49,000 found
However, police refuted the claims that the bundles contained Rs 5 to 10 lakhs. Kankandy police said they found only Rs 49,000 in the bundle when they counted the same in front of the public. As the owners of the cash are not known, courts will be informed and further processes will be carried out as per orders, they added.
