Mangaluru: A court here has acquitted a man who was accused in a case of sexual assault by promising marriage.

The accused, Taranath, a resident of Konaje, was found not guilty of the charges framed against him.

The charge sheet in the case alleged that Taranath had gotten the phone number of a young woman from the same village where he lived and pestered her to develop an intimate relationship with him.  On May 3, 2018, it was alleged that he met the girl at the Belma Bandi Jatra Mahotsava. On some pretext, he had taken her on a scooter to a secluded hill nearby and sexually assaulted her, the chargesheet claimed.

Based on the complaint by the girl, Taranath had been arrested and a case was initiated against him in court.

However, the court found the evidence presented against the accused to be unsatisfactory. The Sixth Additional District Sessions Judge Srikanta Raj, after examining the witnesses and evidence, concluded that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges against the accused conclusively and acquitted Taranath of all charges.
