On January 13, Keshavamurthy, along with his friend Mallesh and Bharat consumed liquor in Chikkabanavara. While returning home, Keshavamurthy advised Bharath to look after his wife. In a fit of anger, Bharath stabbed Keshavamurthy and his friend Mallesh. Both were seriously injured and were admitted to the hospital by locals.

Keshavamurthy died on January 14 at a hospital due to the injuries sustained in the attack.
