Madikeri: The mortal remains of a man who was suspected to have murdered a young woman in Nangala Village near Virajpete were found on Tuesday night.

It may be recalled that B Aarati (24) was found brutally hacked to death at Nangala Village near Virajpete on Sunday evening near her home. A motorbike helmet was recovered at the crime spot which was said to belong to Thimmayya, a local youth. Thimmayya had gone missing since the incident.

Some other items including a mobile phone, liquor bottles, and a bottle containing poison were also found at the lakeside nearby.

Police treated the case to be a murder-suicide. It was suspected that Thimmayya may have ended his life by jumping into the lake after killing Aarati. A search operation for tracing Thimmayya’s body in the lake was launched on Monday. However, even after 2 days of searching, all efforts were futile.

The search continued after the lake water was emptied and the mortal remains of Thimmayya were found at around midnight on Tuesday.

As recovery of Thimmayya’s body was delayed, there were suspicions that he may have fled after the crime. Police had formed 3 teams to trace his whereabouts.

With the recovery of the body, police have now shifted their attention to finding the motive behind the murder-suicide.

It is learnt that Thimmayya was an accused in a case of theft at a gold jewellery shop in Bengaluru that occurred a few years ago. He was living in Rudraguppe, Virajpet, his hometown after being released from jail.
