The Mangaluru City Corporation has decided to conduct a survey to determine the number of stray dogs in the city in the backdrop of public complaints about a rise in their population.

Residents from different areas in the city including Vamanjoor, Kottara, Surathkal, Kadri, Urwa, and Mannagudda have expressed concern over stray dogs that are seen in packs.

Despite an annual survey of stray dogs being mandated in the rules, the corporation has not conducted a survey of the stray dog population in recent times and does not have a database on its numbers in the city.

In order to keep a check on the stray dog population around 8549 canines have been sterilised in the last five years through Animal Care Trust in Shaktinagar. The stray dogs are kept at the NGO’s facility for a 4-day period after the sterilisation process and then relocated to the area from where they were picked up.

A V-shaped mark is done on the left ear to identify the dogs that have undergone neutering. Two doctors and seven other staff at the NGO are involved in neutering the dogs.

The corporation also provides compensation of Rs 2,000 to any person who gets bitten by a stray dog.
