Sullia: A man allegedly attempted to self-immolate himself inside the bank premises as he was unable to repay the loan availed by him.

The man identified as Shivanna Gowda was saved due to the quick action of the bank staff.

As per reports, Gowda had availed Rs 18.5 lakh loan from the credit cooperative society in Sullia for business purposes in 2015. He was making regular repayments until the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Later, as Gowda failed to make repayments the loan amount kept increasing due to the accrual of interest.

The bank had asked Gowda to repay the loan and even offered a discount on the interest amount. However, as Gowda was unable to make the repayment he arrived at the bank premises on Monday morning with a petrol can and threatened to immolate himself.

The branch manager and other staff managed to hold him and pull him out of the bank. Later the police arrived at the scene and Gowda was counseled by them.
