A man in Mangaluru was defrauded of Rs 15.34 lakh through an online scam.

The victim received a message on WhatsApp on March 4 from an unknown number offering a part-time job. The message included a link to Google and displayed a rating for the job. The scammer instructed the victim to download the Telegram app and complete three tasks to double his money.

Initially, the victim was asked to invest Rs 150, followed by Rs 200, and received Rs 2800 in return. The victim followed the scammer’s instructions and clicked on the provided link, creating an account with a password. The scammer then requested that the victim send Rs 2,800, which he did. The amount requested then increased to Rs 9,000 and later to Rs 25,000.

The victim, unaware of the scam, transferred Rs 15.34 lakh in multiple transactions between March 4 and 8. However, he did not receive any doubled amount and realized he had been defrauded. Upon discovering the scam, the victim filed a case with the CEN police station in the city, reporting the online fraud.
