Former MLA Bakila Hukrappa, who once held the position of Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Sullia Constituency, worked as a daily wage laborer even after becoming a powerful politician in the government.
Despite winning the seat as a BJP candidate in the 1983 assembly elections, Hukrappa’s legislative term was cut short after only 19 months due to the government’s collapse and re-elections.
During his short tenure as an MLA, Hukrappa represented the government at the Olympic Games held in Los Angeles. However, after leaving office, he had to try his luck by joining various political parties but failed to win any election. Despite his unsuccessful political career, Hukrappa did not lose hope and instead chose to support his family by working as a daily wage laborer.
Surprisingly, even when he contested the 1990 election and declared his assets, Hukrappa had only Rs. 250 in his bank balance, his wife’s gold earring worth Rs 4,000, and a small agricultural land. Hukrappa also served as the president of Guthigaru G.P. for two and a half years.
In November 2017, Hukrappa died following a prolonged illness at his house. He was aged 68.
