Mangaluru: In a major development, the last date for depositing firearms and weapons has been revised to April 13. Earlier the last date for depositing the arms was notified as April 24.
In the backdrop of the Karnataka Assembly elections, all gun license holders in the Dakshina Kannada district have been directed to deposit their weapons at local police stations or authorized ammunition dealers by April 13, a press release from the office of DK District Superintendent of Police said.
Failure to comply with this directive will result in appropriate legal action being taken, the release said.
The action has been taken in a bid to conduct free, fair, and peaceful elections in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, the press release added.
In a notification dated March 30, the District Returning Officer and District Magistrates had issued an order in pursuance of Section 17 (3) (b) of the Indian Arms Act, 1959, asking licensed arms holders to deposit their weapons at local police stations or authorized ammunition dealers by April 24.
However, on April 6, the District Electoral Officer and District Magistrate issued a revised order effectively modifying the last date of depositing the weapons to April 13, the release said.
