Mangaluru: As the election fever is heating up, star campaigners are making a beeline for the state. Accordingly, the coastal region is gearing up for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit on May 3, raising new expectations in the BJP camp.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to attend a convention in the Kolnad region of the Moodabidri assembly segment, involving Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.
BJP spokesperson Capt. Ganesh Karnik said that the convention is expected to draw a crowd of 2 lakh people, and preparations are in full swing to ensure that the event runs smoothly. A paddy field near the Kolnadu bus stand next to the National Highway is being leveled to make way for the convention.
A German-style Pandal, measuring 300m in length and 100-150m in width, will be constructed by a Mumbai-based company, he said.
Separate roads and parking facilities
Separate access roads are being constructed for the public, VIPs, VVIPs, and PM Modi to enter the convention venue. A separate parking arrangement is also being made for those coming from Mangaluru and Udupi side, Karnik added.
Officials from the Public Works Department have inspected the site, where Krishi Mela was held last year, for the construction of a helipad in Kolnad, which will be used to land helicopters. There are also plans to use the NMPA helipad as an alternative.
Traffic disruptions expected
Meanwhile, the police department is preparing to manage the heavy vehicular traffic on the highway during the convention. The program is scheduled to begin at 11 am, and the traffic of vehicles could be restricted from 7 am.
The vehicles traveling from Mangaluru to Udupi could be rerouted via KPT-Kuloor-Haleyangady and the vehicles going from Udupi to Mangaluru are expected to be rerouted from Padubidri and Mulki.
