Two people, including a student, have fallen prey to online fraud and have been cheated of Rs 1.36 lakhs in two separate incidents.
In the first incident, the student was cheated of Rs 28,400 after responding to an advertisement on Google Chrome for a laptop sale at a reduced price.
The advertisement led him to a WhatsApp page, where a stranger promised to sell him an HP brand laptop for just Rs 12,000. The stranger asked the student to send Rs 400 to book the order, and then convinced him to send Rs 28,400 in various phases. Despite sending the entire amount, the fraudster continued to pressure the student for more money. The case has been registered in the CEN police station of the city.
In the second incident, a person was duped of Rs 1.08 lakhs by an online fraudster who promised him a part-time job. The victim received a Google link message from a mobile number and was asked to download the Telegram app. The fraudster then asked the victim to complete 10 tasks in order to double his money. After sending Rs 1,500, the victim was asked to provide details to open an account and gave away the OTP, resulting in Rs 1.08 lakhs being transferred in different transactions. The victim has filed a case with the CEN police station.
