Subrahmanya: Tragedy struck as two sisters drowned in the Kankal-Kumaradhara river at Pelathagundi near Balpa under Subrahmanya police station limits in Kadaba taluk on Monday evening, leaving their family devastated.
The deceased have been identified as Hansitha (15) and Avanthika (11), daughters of Satish Ammannaya, who had come to Kankal on Monday with their mother on school vacations.
The family had reportedly gone to the Kumaradhara river near the house in the evening. While the family was near the river, the two sisters went missing after getting into the river.
The family immediately started searching for the girls and even called the fire brigade from Sullia to help. Local swimmers also joined the search, and after an intensive search in the river, the dead bodies of the two sisters were found at night.
The family of the deceased lived in Bengaluru where Satish Ammannaya worked as an engineer. It is learned that the mother and daughters had come to Kankal to attend a program on Tuesday.
It is suspected that the sisters may have gone to the deep end and slipped into the water, resulting in the tragedy.
Subrahmanya police visited the scene and conducted an investigation.
