Rain and thunderstorms bring respite to Dakshina Kannada & Udupi

Mangaluru/Udupi: Much-needed relief arrived in the form of rain and thunderstorms as Dakshina Kannada, and most parts of Udupi district, including Mangaluru city areas, experienced a spell of precipitation on Thursday evening. The region, which had been experiencing a hot and humid spell in recent days, witnessed a significant drop in temperatures as the rain brought respite from the prevailing humidity.
In Mangaluru city, the past few days had seen scanty rainfall. The city had been enveloped in cloudy and humid weather since Thursday morning. However, at around 8 pm, a substantial downpour accompanied by thunder and lightning graced the city, providing a refreshing change.
Various areas in the region, including Belthangady, Dharmasthala, Madantyar, Kuvettu, Gerukatte, Nidle, Venur, Uppinangady, Ilanthila, Perne, Subrahmanya, Sullia, Bellare, Kadaba, Kollamogru, Panja, Edamangala, Puttur, Bettampady, Panaje, Bantwal, BC Road, Punjalakatte, Sarapady, Punacha, Vitla, Sampya, and Badiyadka, witnessed significant rainfall.
There were reports of destruction due to the heavy winds. In Pilichandikallu, traffic disruptions occurred for several hours due to a fallen tree blocking the roads. Additionally, over ten electric poles were damaged throughout the region.
Udupi district also experienced thunderstorm showers in several areas on Thursday. Rain accompanied by thunder occurred in the evening around Udupi, Manipal, Kapu, Shirva, Udyavara, Katapadi, and Padubidri. The city witnessed a short but heavy downpour after 7 pm.
Power outages were reported in numerous locations across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts due to damaged electricity poles. Rural areas were particularly affected, enduring several hours without electricity.
Yellow alert on May 12
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, a Yellow alert has been issued for May 12 for the coastal districts. Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are expected to receive substantial rainfall, and there is a possibility of high waves in the sea.
As per IMD data, Mangaluru city recorded a maximum temperature of 35.2 degrees Celsius on Thursday, one degree above the normal average, while the minimum temperature stood at 26.1 degrees Celsius.
