Belthangady: In a puzzling turn of events, the lifeless body of a homeless man was discovered near the Ujire telephone exchange on Friday evening. The deceased had been known to the locals as Tammaiah (55), who reportedly hailed from Kushalanagar, Madikeri, but appeared to have no known kin or heirs.
For an extended period, Tammaiah had been spending his days alone in front of the bus stand and shops adjacent to the BSNL office in Ujire. His presence at the location had become a familiar sight to the locals, who were unaware of his background or personal history.
Local volunteers of the Ujire Belalu disaster management unit — Ravindra, Sudhir, and Raghavendra — alerted the Belthangady police upon discovering the lifeless body.
During a thorough examination of the deceased’s belongings, conducted in the presence of law enforcement officials, Rs 6.65 Lakhs in cash was found stashed in a bag found near the corpse.
The sum has been handed over to the police department, who will pursue further investigation. It is believed that Tammaiah accumulated this wealth through his toil as a wage earner.
The police authorities, in light of this discovery, have urged any potential heirs of the deceased to contact the Belthangady police station promptly.
