A car plunged into a stream at Addole in Shiradi village in the early hours of Sunday, killing one of its occupants and injuring another.
The deceased has been identified as Hariprasad (45), who was a passenger in the ill-fated car. The driver Gopi (45) sustained injuries and is receiving treatment at a hospital. It is said the car was moving towards Dharmasthala from Hosur in Tamil Nadu.
The car broke through the barrier on the bridge over the stream and fell into the water. Locals and other commuters rushed to their rescue with help from the local police who swiftly reached the spot.
Though the exact cause of the accident remains unknown, it is suspected that either the driver may have dozed off or may have lost control while overtaking another vehicle, leading to the tragedy.
A case has been registered at the Uppinangady police station.
