Meat enthusiasts are in for a rude awakening as the price of chicken meat has soared to unprecedented heights, leaving consumers astounded.

Two years ago, chicken meat was available at Rs 160 per kilogram, but it has now reached a staggering Rs 290.

The market has witnessed a steady rise in prices, with skinless chicken meat selling for Rs. 260 to Rs 290 per kilogram. Only a few days ago, it ranged between Rs 230 and Rs 250.

The price of  chicken meat with skin has also experienced a substantial surge, escalating from Rs 220 to Rs 260. Additionally, mutton prices have skyrocketed to Rs 700 per kilogram, while Bannuru Special Mutton is being sold at Rs 800.

Various factors contribute to this alarming price hike. The cost of chicken feed, which includes grain, rice bran, maize, and soya, has increased significantly.

Furthermore, rising fuel prices and transportation costs further burden the poultry industry. The scorching sun has resulted in chickens consuming less food, and their high water intake fails to increase the fat content. Moreover, the intense heat has led to poultry fatalities, which consequently slows down meat production, according to poultry farmers.

Adding to the concerns, the coastal regions are experiencing a scarcity of fresh fish due to the onset of the rainy season. Traders assert that the surge in chicken prices is primarily due to the heightened demand in the absence of fresh fish supply.

Apart from chicken, other food items have also witnessed steep price hikes. Tomatoes, ginger, alasande (black-eyed peas), and coriander have doubled in price, with alasande reaching Rs. 100 per kilogram, ginger at Rs 200, and coriander rising from Rs 140 to Rs 150. Additionally, tomatoes now cost between Rs 40 and Rs 50, while beans are being sold at Rs 100.
