Mangaluru: People of the Hoige area at Ullal-Jeppinamogaru have been forced to use a circuitous route ever since the footbridge has fallen in ruins.
The Hoige area is situated at a distance of about 700 meters on the left-hand side of the Nethravati bridge on the Thokkottu-Mangaluru route. Hundreds of residents here depended on the footbridge to access National Highway 66 from where there could use buses and other public transport facilities. To reach the Hoige area by vehicle, people will have to travel via Thokkottu, which lengthens the journey by about 6 km.
Currently, more than 300 families reside in the Hoige area, which falls under the Mangaluru City Corporation limits. But, with the footbridge being unusable, they are compelled to take the long route via Thokkottu to reach the city.
The metal pedestrian bridge that was built many years ago, has seen many repairs over the years. However, this time round the main pillar supporting the walkway collapsed due to rust caused by salt water from the river.
Despite many efforts, including welding work, the situation is beyond repair. Moreover, transporting materials by boat is proving challenging.
Local corporator Veenamangala said that there are plans to construct a permanent motorable bridge with Rs 2 crore special grants.
