Udupi: In an unprecedented protest held at Chittaranjan Circle on Tuesday morning, alcoholics in Udupi expressed their dissatisfaction with the state government and made a fervent appeal for the provision of free alcohol.

Organized in collaboration with the Udupi Civic Committee, the demonstration featured a bottle of liquor adorned with flowers, the ceremonial lighting of an aarti, and the rhythmic beat of drums, all aimed at capturing attention and highlighting their cause.

Prominent figures from the Civic Committee, Nithyananda Ukkadu and Govinda Shetty, addressed the gathering, passionately urging the government to implement a scheme that would provide 90 ml of alcohol in the morning and an additional 90 ml in the evening, completely free of charge, specifically tailored to cater to the needs of alcoholics.

The alcoholics’ plea is rooted in their belief that the government, bolstered by the revenue generated from liquor taxes, possesses the necessary economic power to support such a free alcohol scheme. They argue that the current system has unjustly neglected the interests of those who have a fondness for alcohol.

The protesters went a step further in their demands, urging the government to consider two alternatives: either provide alcohol free of cost or enforce a complete ban on its sale and consumption.
