Gruha Jyoti Yojana confusion: Regular electricity bills leave people perplexed

Confusion has arisen among people due to the Congress party’s promise of free electricity for up to 200 units per household. Many folks got regular electricity bills this time despite consuming less than 200 units.

Though the government explained that only those who used less than 200 units on average every month in the past year could get the benefits of Gruha Jyoti Yojana, some people who used more than 200 units last year thought they could still use the scheme.

In one such instance, a person from Uppinangadi got a bill, even though they used less than 200 units last month. When they asked about this, they were told that their average usage over the past year was more than 200 units per month.

Speaking to “Udayavani”, the person said, “Even though we used only 191 units in July, we still got a bill. We thought we could benefit from the Gruha Jyoti Yojana. But when we got the bill from Mescom, we were sad to see that we had to pay the full amount.”

Meanwhile, officials from Mescom in Mangaluru explained, “The Gruha Jyoti Yojana is only for those who used less than 200 units on average every month in the past year. If you used more than 200 units on average last year, even if you use less now, you can’t use the scheme. We calculate the total units used from April to March of the previous year, divide it by 12, and if it’s less than 200 units, then you can use the free plan now.”
