Endoscopic Surgery POEM hands-on workshop organized at Kasturba Hospital Manipal

Department of Gastroenterology, Kasturba Medical College and Hospital, Manipal organized an Endoscopic Surgery POEM (Peroral endoscopic myotomy) hands-on workshop on 2nd and 3rd September 2023.
This is first of its kind training program and workshop on a novel endoscopic procedure for the treatment of achalasia Cardia, difficulty in eating food, a disorder of the Esophagus that can be managed by incision-less, scarless endoscopic surgery called Peroral endoscopic myotomy. The patient will be discharged within 48 hours if the procedure goes on eventful. Doctors from Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, and Shivamoga attended and were trained in these newer techniques.
The resource persons were – Dr. Rajvenugopal from Bangalore, Dr. Prakash Zakaria from Cochin . Dr Shiran Shetty, and Dr. Ganesh Bhat both from Kasturba Hospital Manipal. Dr. Shiran Shetty, Professor and Head Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology said Kasturba Hospital has the latest technology and equipment on par with global standards and the procedure is done at a very low cost compared to other hospitals in India. On the eve of 70 years of celebrations, Kasturba Medical College is conducting various educative programs and workshops to spread knowledge and education which was the dream of our founder Dr. TMA Pai.
