Intense rains drench Dakshina Kannada and Udupi

Mangaluru/Udupi: Dakshina Kannada (DK) and Udupi districts experienced a significant surge in rainfall on Friday, September 29, offering relief from the recent dry spell. Mangaluru witnessed intense downpours in both the morning and evening hours.

Beltangady,  Shishila, Arasinamakki, and Dharmasthala, received substantial rainfall over the past two days. In Karkala, moderate to heavy rains prevailed. However, the region also saw instances of damage, including a coconut tree falling on a residence in Kumbale Manteguli. Meanwhile, in Moodbidri, the taluk stadium at Swaraj Maidan bore the brunt of high-velocity winds, resulting in damage to its roof.

The inclement weather prompted most fishermen to call off their activities as a cyclone formed in the Arabian Sea due to low pressure. Waves of considerable height were observed at sea, causing boats from Malpe to seek shelter in Goa and Karwar ports.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts on September 29, with the alert remaining in effect until the morning of September 30. Additionally, a yellow alert was issued for Dakshina Kannada, Bidar, Kalaburgi, Chikkaballapur, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Kolar districts.

The IMD’s bulletin predicts widespread moderate to heavy rains, and isolated very heavy rains, in North Interior Karnataka and Coastal Karnataka districts from September 29 to October 01. This is attributed to a depression in the Arabian Sea, which is anticipated to intensify as a low-pressure area and move west-northwestwards in the next 24 hours.
