Bengaluru: A former employee of the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has been apprehended on charges of fabricating signatures of senior officials and granting contracts to ineligible firms over the past three years, causing a substantial loss of over Rs 17 crore to the BMTC, police said on Wednesday.

The accused was identified as Shriram Mulkavan, a former chief traffic manager at BMTC.

Shriram, along with six colleagues from the commercial department of BMTC, was placed under suspension following an internal investigation initiated by BMTC, which brought to light the purported malpractice.

The Assistant Security and Vigilance Officer, Ramya C.K., filed an FIR at the Wilson Garden police station on October 2 against the seven suspended BMTC officials, uncovering a grave case of fraud. As per the complainant’s account, the corporation incurred a cumulative loss of over Rs 17 crore due to the alleged malfeasance, police officials said.

The FIR has alleged that the fraudulent activities transpired between March 2020 and September 2023, leading to losses of Rs 10.5 crore and Rs 6.91 crore in several instances for the corporation.
