NZ all-rounder Rachin Ravindra’s Karnataka connection and an interesting story behind his name

Bengaluru: In a remarkable display of talent, 23-year-old New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra garnered attention on Thursday by smashing an impressive 123 runs off just 96 balls in the World Cup opener against England. Rachin has a deep-rooted connection to Karnataka; his parents and grandparents hail from Bengaluru!

In an exclusive interview with “Udayavani,” Rachin’s grandfather, Balakrishna Adiga, shed light on the cricketer’s journey and his ties to the state.

How did Rachin develop an interest in cricket?

Rachin’s father, Ravindra, held a keen passion for cricket. He is a software engineer in New Zealand. Naturally, Dad’s passion for cricket was cultivated in his son.

Can Rachin communicate in Kannada?

Though born and raised in New Zealand, Rachin comprehends Kannada well. He can converse in Kannada, albeit not fluently.

Rachin’s connection with Karnataka

Rachin visits Karnataka annually with his parents. He also practices cricket in Bengaluru. He holds a fondness for the culture and cuisine here. When he visits, he spends an extended period with us.

Rahul+Sachin = Rachin

Rachin’s father, Ravindra, admires Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. Hence, they combined the letters from Rahul and Sachin’s names to christen their son as ‘Rachin’.

Rachin’s roots to Udupi

Rachin’s mother Deepa is the daughter of Balakrishna Adiga. His grandfather, Balakrishna Adiga, is a retired principal of Vijaya College and also a professor of zoology. Balakrishna Adiga’s ancestors hailed from Neelavara in Udupi district.
