Mangaluru: A marine conservation center is in the final stages of construction near Tannirbhavi beach, marking a one-of-its-kind initiative in Karnataka. Costing Rs 17 lakh, the center is funded under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).
The primary objective of this center is to provide medical aid to injured marine creatures within the vicinity of Mangaluru. Often, dolphins, sharks, and sea tortoises suffer injuries from fishing nets or boat propeller wings. Currently, there exists no such facility in Karnataka, while states like Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat have established similar centers.
Antony Mariyappa, DCF of the Mangaluru forest department, emphasized the lack of a systematic approach to treating injured marine life. Presently, experts are summoned to administer on-site treatment. With the establishment of this center, a more comprehensive and effective treatment can be provided.
Two years ago, a marine cell was inaugurated in Karwar, also with the same objective. However, the success of such endeavors hinges on expert staff.
The center’s location, in front of Tree Park, presents a logistical challenge for transporting large injured animals from the sea. Some suggest that proximity to the beach would have been more convenient. Beach tourism expert Yathish Baikampady underscores the need for heightened awareness regarding sea tortoise protection, while suggesting that constructing a rescue center might not be the sole solution.
As Karnataka boasts a coastline stretching 370 km, the establishment of this conservation center serves as a crucial step towards safeguarding marine life in the region. Once the project receives approval and funding, the center is poised to commence operations, further solidifying Karnataka’s commitment to marine conservation.
