Press Release, Oct 12, 2023, 6:37 PM IST

The Centre for Climate Studies, Department of Civil Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology (MAHE) has secured a research project to monitor the potential fishing zones in the Arabian Sea (off Udupi district).

The Centre Coordinator and Associate Professor, Dr. Anish Kumar Warrier, MIT Manipal, is the principal investigator, and Dr. K. Balakrishna, Professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, MIT, Manipal, is the co-principal investigator of the project. The three-year project, costing Rs. 93.15 lakhs, is funded by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India.

In this project, the scientific team will study the biogeochemical properties of the waters of the potential fishing zones and attempt to predict the quantity of fish catch. Further, the study will investigate the impact of global warming and climate change on the fish catch in the region.

Another team of scientists led by Dr. Damodar Shenoy, Dr. Siby Kurian, and Dr. Mandar Nanajkar from the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa, will be closely associated with this project. This project is expected to provide valuable information on the health of fish in response to climate change.

This initiative not only underlines the commitment of MAHE to scientific research and environmental sustainability but also signifies the institute’s dedication to leveraging advanced technologies and expertise to address global challenges such as climate change.
