Belthangady: Following the discovery of a woman body in a well near her residence in Kenchanottu of Belalu village on November 3, her husband has been remanded to judicial custody for her murder.
Police said that Sudhakar Naik (31), the husband of the deceased woman Shashikala (25) has been arrested. He was produced before the court in Belthangady which remanded him to judicial custody.
Sudhakar had told police that his wife had taken her own life and that he had found Shashikala’s body in the well when he returned home from work. However, after a preliminary investigation as well as Sudhakar’s odd behaviour, police suspected foul play and detained Sudhakar for questioning.
Apparently, Sudhakar had an argument with his wife over his suspicion about an illicit relationship. In a fit of rage, he strangled her to death and threw the body into the well. To hoodwink the police, he staged a suicide drama, Dharmasthala police said.
It is gathered that Shashikala and Sudhakar are relatives, fell in love, and married 7 years ago. Sudhakar, who worked as a rubber tapper, built a house on the plantation and the couple lived there.
