Udupi/Malpe: A day after police used lathi-charge to disperse a unruly mob that congregated near the house of the murder victims on Thursday, police said they have booked a case against the instigators.

A case has been registered at the Malpe police station against the mob for unlawful assembly, rioting and obstructing public officials.

A large crowd had gathered when the police brought the accused Praveen Chougale to the crime scene at Nejar for investigation on Thursday. The mob of 100-200 persons chanted slogans calling for instant justice.

“The mob did not disperse despite requests from local leaders. Laticharge was done as a last resort when the protestors charged at the police vehicle. One of KSRP staff got injured in the incident,” said Udupi SP Dr Arun K.

We have information that some people instigated the mob. We have registered an FIR against them for rioting.  We will take action only on those instigators. No action will be taken against the local public who were watching,” he added.
