Kasaragod: A group of suspected Naxals dressed in army fatigues were reportedly sighted in a forest area inhabited by tribals near Kelagam Primary Health Center in Kannur district.
Locals alerted the police about the suspicious activity. A stranger speaking in Malayalam, a mixture of Kannada and Tamil, reportedly approached a local asking for food. When the local said that his home was far away, the person fled from the spot. It is alleged that the suspect had a weapon wrapped in cloth.
Following the incident, the police and anti-naxal force (Thunderbolt) searched the area but could not locate the Naxals.
Security has been increased in the wake of the ‘Nava Kerala Sadasu’ (Navakerala Yatra) under the leadership of the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vinjayan.
A few days ago, a gun battle broke out between the police and Naxalites on the border areas of Kannur-Kodagu districts. Some Naxals were injured in the incident and the two were arrested by the police.
