In an exclusive interview with Udayavani, MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, President of the Bengaluru Kambala Committee, revealed the inspiration behind bringing the traditional Coastal Kambala Utsav in the capital city. Rai discussed the cultural significance, logistical details, and the overwhelming response from coastal residents anticipating the grand event.

MLA Ashok Kumar Rai shared the unique journey of conceptualizing and realizing the Coastal Kambala Utsav in Bengaluru. He emphasized the deep-rooted history of Coastal Kambala, dating back over 700 years, and the cultural continuity celebrated through generations.

Rai discussed how the idea of organizing the Kambala Utsav in Bengaluru was born out of discussions surrounding the recognition of the Tulu language in the Karnataka Assembly. The event is envisioned not only as a sporting spectacle but also as a platform to showcase and celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity of the coastal region.

Initially uncertain about the response, Rai expressed satisfaction with over 200 buffalo pairs registering for the Bengaluru Kambala. Additionally, 18 new pairs of byffaloes have been introduced, trained, and are ready to participate in the event.

Rai assured that the Bengaluru Kambala adheres to Supreme Court rules. Reflecting the religious aspect, Rai detailed initiation of Kambala’s preliminary rituals. Special pujas to deities like Nagadeva and Vighna Vinayaka Ganapathi are conducted, endowing the event with divine significance.

Rai highlighted the extensive arrangements made for the event, including separate tents for convenience, food stalls, and provisions for cooking. The Bengaluru Kambala is estimated to cost around 7 to 8 crores, with support from government grants and public participation.

The MLA emphasized that the public is invited to participate freely in the Kambala Utsav. With 10,000 VVIP seats, well-equipped parking, and food stalls, the event aims to be inclusive and free from party and caste discrimination.

Rai expressed gratitude for the overwhelming response from coastal residents, who are actively participating in the event and requesting accommodations in Bengaluru.

Future Outlook:
While the Bengaluru Kambala Utsav marks its inaugural edition, Rai hinted at the possibility of organizing similar events in other locations, with growing interest from Mumbai-based organizations. The success of the event may pave the way for future editions, potentially becoming an annual cultural spectacle in the capital city.
