Chikkamagaluru: Cops went on a silent protest here on Saturday, following the suspension of six police personnel for allegedly assaulting a lawyer.
The staff of six police stations and the family of suspended cops gathered in front of the city police station and voiced their displeasure over the “unjust” action.
Chikkamagaluru District Superintendent of Police, Dr. Vikram Amate intervened in the matter and tried to pacify the agitators. IGP Dr. Chandragupta also rushed to the spot from Mangaluru.
According to the protestors, lawyer Pritam, who had an argument with the police over not wearing a helmet, misbehaved with the police personnel near the station. A group of lawyers came to his support and obstructed the work of the police. The police have been given a suspended sentence for doing their duty, they alleged.
The police who protect the people are defenseless, they alleged and demanded that a case should be registered against the lawyers for obstructing police from doing their duties.
Responding to the protestors’ demands, Dr Amate said that the case is being heard in the High Court. The guilty will be punished and the innocent will be protected by law, he said and also suggested that the police should return to duty.
Not satisfied by the assurances, the police personnel and family members, moved to Hanumanthappa circle from near the city police station and blocked the road. As the news of the protest of police personnel spread, more personnel joined in.
