A 26-year-old man identified as Rakesh from Kallubalu village, Jigani, took his own life by self-immolation in Kodipalya. The incident occurred on Wednesday, and the young man succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.
Rakesh, who was pursuing his diploma, had been in a relationship for the past five or six years with a young woman from Hemmigepura. Recently, the young woman got engaged to another man, leading to a strained relationship with Rakesh. Enraged and hurt to witness his beloved with someone else, Rakesh confronted the young woman at her residence in Kodipalya.
During the confrontation, Rakesh expressed his displeasure and demanded that the young woman continue their relationship. When she refused, a heated argument ensued, and Rakesh, in a fit of desperation and heartbreak, poured petrol on himself and set ablaze. Onlookers rushed to his aid, extinguishing the flames and rushing him to Victoria Hospital.
Despite efforts to save him, Rakesh succumbed to severe burn injuries, with approximately 60% of his body affected. The Kengeri police have registered a case in connection with the incident.
