Mangaluru: A 30-year-old man died allegedly due to drowning at the MCC-run Mangala Simming Pool at Ladyhill on Tuesday, December 12.

The deceased has been identified as Abhishek Anand, a native of Gurgaon in Haryana.

According to police, the incident occurred at the public swimming pool between 4.45 pm and 5 pm. The victim was pulled out of the water and brought to Wenlock Hospital where he was declared dead at 6.25 pm, police added.

Abhishek had reportedly entered the swimming pool at 4:30 pm, earlier than the permitted time of 4:45 pm to 5:30 pm. Despite approximately 30 people swimming, no one noticed him drowning. A boy eventually alerted the lifeguards.

Lifeguards Rajendra and Pundaleeka attempted to resuscitate him. Dr. Narendra Nayak and lifeguard Rajendra performed CPR on Abhishek, yet it didn’t prove effective. CCTV footage captured Abhishek’s arrival, entry, and swimming in the pool.

Meanwhile, the Barke police have filed a case.

Potential cause:

While administering first aid, pool staff reportedly observed Abhishek vomiting food and blood. There’s a suspicion that a potential heart attack may have caused the sudden drowning.

Previous incidents:

This marks the third death at the civic body-run the Mangala swimming pool. Sohan (13) from Bolur passed away on October 25, 2013, and Yajnesh (19) from Jodukatte on March 24, 2019.
