SUV-truck collision: 4 Karnataka pilgrims en route to Shirdi killed, 6 others injured

A fatal collision between an SUV and a container truck near Pande village on the Karmala-Ahmednagar Road on Wednesday claimed the lives of four pilgrims, hailing from Karnataka and left six others injured.

The deceased have been identified as Sharda Hiremath, 67 of Hubli, Jemi Deepak Hiremath, 38 of Gulbarga, Srishal Chandaga Kumbhar, 55, and his wife Sashikala, 50.

The SUV occupants were proceeding from Gulbarga via Solapur towards Shirdi Saibaba Temple in Ahmednagar when it reportedly rammed into a container truck here at around 6 am.

The SUV toppled into a ditch owing to the impact of the collision. Four of the occupants were killed on the spot in the mishap while six others were rescued from the vehicle by the locals. A team of police personnel reached the spot and the injured were taken to the Karmala Sub-District Hospital.

The injured include an eight-month-old Nakshatra V. Kumbhar, Kaveri V. Kumbhar, Soumya S. Kumbhar, 26, Sridhar Srishal Kumbhar, 24, Sasikumar T. Kumbhar, 36, and Shrikant R. Chavan, 27. The condition of the two injured persons is described as critical.

The cause of the road disaster is not clear and the Karmala police have registered an accident case with further investigations underway. The families of the deceased victims, all in Gulbarga district have been informed of the tragedy, while the bodies have been sent for an autopsy.
