Mangaluru: Notorious rowdy sheeter ‘Akashbhavan’ Sharan was nabbed after being fired at his legs, police said on Tuesday.
Additionally, police have also arrested Sharan’s accomplice, who had sheltered him. Sharan has been injured in the incident and has been admitted to a private hospital, they added.
Police reportedly launched the operation to arrest Sharan after receiving information that he was in Udupi. Sharan and his associate were followed as they moved towards Mangaluru in a vehicle. Upon crossing Pumpwell, Sharan attempted to escape and attacked the police near Jappu Kuthpadi. Consequently, the police opened fire.
Recently, Sharan had evaded arrest by trying to mow down police personnel. According to a case filed in Kavoor police station, on the night of January 2, when CCB police stopped a car in which Sharan was driving at Maryhill. In a bid to escape, Sharan allegedly rammed the car into the police vehicle and fled the scene.
‘Akashbhavan’ Sharan is wanted in several criminal cases. As many as 21 cases including murder, attempted murder, rape of a minor girl, and hafta collection have been registered against Akashbhavan Sharan in Mangalore and Udupi.
Last October, the Karnataka High Court sentenced 5 people, including Renuka Prasad, to life imprisonment in the murder case of KVG Polytechnic College administrator Ramakrishna. Akashbhavan Sharan, who was a hired hand in carrying out the murder, was also among the accused. However, his sentence was not pronounced as he had been absconding at the time.
Sharan is also accused of orchestrating the murder of Surendra Bantwal in 2020, while he was in jail. He was released on bail at the end of 2022. He was arrested again in a case of attempted extortion after intercepting a scooter near Suratkal on January 14, 2023. Four months later he was released from prison on bail and went into hiding. A case has also been registered against him under the Arms Act.
