Bantwal: In a heartbreaking incident on Sunday afternoon, an elderly couple was charred to death while attempting to put out a fire that erupted on a hillock near Lorettopadav in Bantwal.

The deceased have been identified as Gilbert Carlo (78) and his wife Christina Carlo (70).

The couple, residents of Thundupadav, met their untimely demise under unclear circumstances. Reports suggest the fire might have broken out due to the intense heat during the afternoon. It remains uncertain if Gilbert attempted to extinguish the flames and got trapped or if other factors played a role. The proximity of their pump set to the fire’s origin raises speculation about a possible electrical short circuit.

Local residents discovered the lifeless bodies when they approached the fire site. The incident occurred between 12:30 and 1:30 pm.

Lawrence, a resident, had reportedly warned the couple of the fire danger around noon, urging them to return. However, it appears they might have revisited the area later.

The fire site is about 100 meters from the couple’s residence. Gilbert’s lifeless body was found at a higher elevation, while Christina’s body was in a lower area, suggesting the possibility that she caught fire first.

Efforts to douse the fire were hampered, as the fire brigade vehicle couldn’t reach the spot. Locals attempted to control the blaze using buckets of water.

Following a post-mortem conducted at Bantwal Government Hospital, the bodies were temporarily housed at Thumbe Hospital’s mortuary. Sources indicate that the couple’s daughters from abroad are expected to arrive on the evening of January 29 for the funeral, scheduled for the next day.

Gilbert and Christina had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at Loretto Church just a year ago. The couple, survived by three daughters, had settled in Bantwal post-Gilbert’s retirement from overseas employment. Both suffered from diabetes, and Gilbert was undergoing dialysis.

As summer approaches, the region faces an increased risk of hill fires. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers posed, emphasizing the need for preventive measures and community awareness regarding fire safety.
