Belthangady: Two persons lost their lives after being hit by a lorry near the Gandhinagar road turn on National Highway 73 between Ujire and Belthangady.

The deceased have been identified as Krishnappa (52), a resident of Gandhinagar Kakkejalu near Ujire, and Mohini (56), a resident of Kuntini.

The incident is attributed to the negligence and high speed of the lorry driver. The dangerous turn on the road from Ujire to Belthangadi poses a risk, especially if motorists approach rapidly.

The victims in the accident were waiting for a bus when the lorry lost control and hit them.  The lorry collided with an electric pole at the roundabout, three shop rooms, and the compound of a nearby house before hitting another electric pole on the opposite side and coming to a halt. Fortunately, since it was Sunday, the closed shop fronts averted a more severe accident.

Following the incident there was a traffic jam on the highway, and the traffic police promptly arrived to manage the situation. They facilitated traffic to Ujire through TB Cross, Surya Road. Subsequently, a crane was employed to relocate the lorry, easing the traffic flow.

Local residents, incensed by the incident, expressed their anger towards the driver.

Meanwhile, the traffic police have detained the lorry driver, and a case has been registered.
